Gayle Pirie
Foreign Cinema opened its doors in 1999 in the Mission District of San Francisco, pioneers in transforming the neighborhood into a culinary destination. The dramatic experience of dining in the sweeping atrium, where films screen nightly, still enchant visitors 18 years later. Now, for the first time, chef-owners Gayle Pirie and John Clark share the best from their distinctive North African, California-Mediterranean menu.

Featuring 125 signature dishes, the book spans Pirie and Clark’s award-winning brunch favorites like Champagne Omelet and Persian Bloody Mary, cocktail hour with Lavender Baked Goat Cheese in Fig Leaves, and dinner fare including a Five-Spice Duck Breast with Cassis Sauce and Madras Curry Fried Chicken with Spiced Honey, alongside instructions for how to blend spice staples like Ras el Hanout. With rich storytelling throughout, Pirie and Clark offer home cooks a chance to take the restaurant into their own kitchen.

Amazing book that brings Foreign Cinema into your home.

This is hands down one if the best restaurants I have ever eaten at. Every dish was amazing but not living in San Francisco any more I thought to try the next best thing - creating the dishes at home. The book is stunning - full of pictures from the iconic restaurant and the associated dishes which is inspiration to start cooking. But even more importantly the dishes are completely doable. I was surprised by both the simplicity of many of the dishes in terms of both ingredients and technique; each step is clearly defined and you can indeed replicate their dishes at home. The chapters include cocktails, seafood, urban picnic, premieres ( small plates : first dishes ), features ( main dishes) , sides, deserted and weekend brunch. Then it finishes with spices, condiments and pickles, sauces, dressings, basic building blocks such as stocks, and finally popcorn. I started somewhat simple with the Chocolate pots de Creme as I had that dessert just a week ago at the restaurant and it was so delicious I could not wait to have it again and it was not that difficult to make - just to allow 4 hours to allow it to set when I wanted to eat it! Next up will be soups and the tuna carpaccio if I can find sushi grade tuna locally. But there are so many delicious choices you will never be stuck for ideas. I cannot wait to keep cooking these dishes. Amazing book, stunning pictures and most importantly delicious recipes.

The bar has been raised for cookbooks!

Foreign Cinema Cookbook just raised the bar for the 21st century cookbook. Stunning photography combined with simple, approachable new and old classic recipes in food. It belongs with the classic books in food preparation, not only showing technics but the artistic presentations that complete the dining experience. Along with their love and contributions to the community, chefs and co owners Gayle Pirie and John Clark are well deserving of the honor bestowed on them by the City of San Francisco proclaiming September 18 as Foreign Cinema Day! A keeper! The cookbook is as sumptuous as the food at FC

We love The Foreign Cinema Cookbook. It tells the compelling story of FC, captures the excitement and intense pleasure of eating there, and most importantly, shares Gayle and John's wonderful recipes, lessons, and stories so you can recreate your favorites and discover new classics. The photography beautifully renders the setting, ambiance, and, of course, the food. Several of our friends have loved receiving a copy.

Perfect for me ... perfect for friends

Having had a wonderful meal in Foreign Cinema (and watched The Maltese Falcon as well!), I have loved having the cookbook, both for the recipes and for the stories. I've bought one copy as a gift already .... and have just purchased another! Both recipients love good and interesting food. In fact, anyone who does would be delighted by this treasure trove.

Top book about a magical restau

There is something about FC that makes it a gem: it might be the food, the service, the atmosphere... it is the combo of all of it. The book captures that magic
